Initial Charging of New Batteries
After the installation of new batteries, they usually need to be charged for a long time. The charging power supply should be charged according to the instructions. After charging, the batteries should be discharged once and recharged again. The purpose is to prolong the service life of the batteries and improve the activity and charge-discharge characteristics of the batteries.
Regular Charging and Discharging
Long-term idle use of batteries in UPS power supply or long-term floating charge of batteries without discharge will lead to a large amount of lead sulfate adsorbed on the cathode surface of batteries, forming the so-called "sulfation" of the cathode plate of batteries. As lead sulfate is an insulator, its formation will certainly charge and discharge batteries. The more sulfates formed on the cathode plate, the greater the internal resistance of the battery, and the worse the charge-discharge performance of the battery, which leads to the decline of "aging" and "activity" of the battery and greatly shortens the service life of the battery. Every 3 to 4 months, the UPS rectifier/charger should be put in the closed state artificially by interrupting the power supply or by means of software/hardware control, so that the battery in UPS can discharge. For this kind of battery discharge operation for "activating" battery, it is better to control the discharge time at 1/3-1/4 of the normal discharge time.
Deep discharge is strictly prohibited
The service life of sealed maintenance-free batteries is closely related to the discharge depth of batteries. Discharge depth refers to the percentage of ampere hours released by battery to its nominal capacity ampere hours in the process of battery use. Deep discharge will cause sulfation of the inner plate surface of the battery, which will increase the internal resistance of the battery. In serious cases, the phenomenon of "reverse pole" will occur in individual batteries and permanent damage of the battery. The discharge depth of the battery seriously affects the service life of the battery, so it is necessary not to let the battery in a deep discharge state.
Avoid overcurrent charging as much as possible
Over-current charging can easily cause the bending of positive and negative plates inside the battery, which can make the active substances on the surface of the plates fall off, resulting in the decrease of the available capacity of the battery, and serious damage to the internal plates due to short circuit.
Avoid battery overvoltage charging as far as possible
Overvoltage charging often results in the water contained in the battery electrolyte being separated into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis, thus shortening the service life of the battery.
Replacement of Batteries with Decreased Activity and Excessive Internal Resistance
(1) With the prolongation of the use time of UPS power supply, the charging and discharging characteristics of some batteries will gradually deteriorate, and the terminal voltage will obviously decrease. The performance of such batteries can no longer be solved by relying on the charging circuit inside the UPS power supply. There will be hidden dangers in the continued use of UPS power supply, which should be replaced in time.
(2) As the internal resistance of the battery increases, the normal charging voltage can not make the battery recover its charging characteristics, so the battery should be replaced in time. The internal resistance of batteries is usually 10-30 m_. If the internal resistance of batteries exceeds 200 m_, it will not be enough to maintain the normal operation of UPS. Batteries with larger internal resistance must be replaced.
Avoid mixing old and new batteries or charging old and new batteries
Because the internal resistance of new batteries is relatively small, and the internal resistance of old batteries increases in varying degrees, when new batteries and old batteries are mixed together for charging, because the internal resistance of old batteries is large, the partial voltage of old batteries will be relatively large, which will easily lead to over-voltage charging; for new batteries, the internal resistance is small, the charging voltage is small, but the current is large, and it is easy to charge. It causes overcurrent phenomenon, so it is necessary to avoid mixing of old and new batteries in the process of charging and discharging.
The Use Environment of Batteries
The service life of the battery is closely related to the environmental temperature. When the battery is at a lower temperature, the zinc plate in the battery is easily pulverized and loses its storage performance, resulting in permanent damage. When the temperature is too high, the capacity of the battery will also decrease, which will cause permanent damage. According to the technical specifications of battery manufacturers, the optimum operating temperature of batteries is 20 - 25 C. The service life of batteries can be prolonged by using the batteries in this temperature range.
